Sue Runyon Designs Newsletter Nov/Dec 2010

Hello to you from my new home in Utah.

Moving always seem to be more work than I remembered, but we're now nearly settled. We love the change from Nevada to Utah. We have a stunning view of the mountains, the Salt Lake Valley, the mouth of Weber Canyon, the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island from our "new" home on a hill.

I'm also loving my new partial basement. I'm converting it into a jewelry studio workshop with several work tables. It also has a computer desk, order packaging area and an for product photography. Once I finish getting it all together I will put some photos of it on my blog. It's great to have the extra space.

NEW CLASSES

It's been wonderful coming here and finding more in the way of jewelry classes to take. I recently took an 11 1/2 hour class on using silver wire wrapping to set stones. You can see my finished project on my blog:

I've also been taking an 8 week metalsmithing class which I just finished. I've really learned a lot. You can see the projects I made on my blog here:

These new skills and techniques will undoubtedly be finding their way into my work soon--when I purchase a few more tools and supplies.

JEWELRY BUYING TIPS & TRENDS

Once in a while I like to keep you updated with the latest color trends. These can certainly impact what jewelry you pick when you get dressed in the morning and what new pieces you purchase.

I think the most intriguing aspect of the fall/winter 2010-11 color trend is the lack of traditional neutrals. Navy, basic brown, grey, black and the rest will always be great wardrobe basics, but this year the emphasis is on a new type of neutral--a neutral that is more flattering to wear. Imagine it this way: take your favorite color of paint and mix it with grey paint and suddenly you have a great new muted color. These subtle colors become a backdrop for all your fashion accessories--including jewelry.

When buying clothes this season look for colors like these: a charcoal with flecks or a sheen of other colors, a lilac that is so muted that it is nearly pearl grey, a softer shade of eggplant purple and a pumpkin color that looks as if it's been mixed with cream. Are you starting to get the idea? Now, think of how easy it is to accessorize these new neutrals with a snappier version of themselves. Think of orange, ivory and gold beads against that creamy pumpkin or a pop of grape with sparkling crystals against that muted eggplant. Try jet black or clear rock crystal against that misty charcoal color. Or go for contrast and pair bright copper with the eggplant and turquoise with the pumpkin.

Aside from painterly colors this season the trend in jewelry is for multi strand pieces. Have you seen them in the fashion magazines? Have you noticed the necklaces and bracelets with perhaps dozens of strands? The large "cowled" and "cuffed" look has been building lately and you can see it in knitwear as well as jewelry. If it's not for you, do not despair, the long loopy necklace look and the multi piece pendants are still very popular.

Oriental and exotic pieces are definitely coming back. The word "jade" is currently the most searched word on my website. I have quite a few pearl, jade and oriental inspired pieces.

After three winters in Las Vegas I'm looking forward to some beautiful Utah snow. Maybe we'll have a White Christmas. I haven't seen one of those in a while.

Hope all is well with you!

God Bless,
