Sue Runyon Designs Newsletter September 2008

The kids are all back in school, there's a hint of autumn in the air and everyone is BUSY so I'll try to keep this somewhat short.

WHAT'S NEW

My biggest news is that I have opened an on-line store at Etsy.com in addition to my website at www.suerunyondesigns.com. Etsy is a growing on-line venue with thousands of "stores" that sell only handcrafted items, crafting supplies and vintage items. If you like unique handcrafted items such as quilt patterns, hand-dyed fabrics, wood carvings, handmade soaps, pottery, and home spun yarns it's an exciting way to shop--kind of like an on-line art festival. It is NOT an auction site like Ebay.

When you purchase something on Etsy you do need an account, which is simple to set up, and you deal individually with each shop owner if you choose to buy something. If you just want to look, you do not need an account. There is a link to my Etsy store at the bottom of my homepage. If you go to my Etsy store and click on my "Favorites" you'll see some of the items from other Etsy vendors that I like. If you wish to purchase items from me and find things you like on both my website and in my Etsy store, just contact me and I can combine a shipment for you so you only pay shipping once.

This month I've added a new perk for everyone who places an order of $100 or more. You'll get a FREE automatic upgrade to Priority Shipping. Just choose First Class Mail for a flat rate of $2 when you check out and I'll send your order by Priority Mail instead--a $3 upgrade. This will not be reflected on your receipt at checkout. It's just my little gift to you. This offer is good in both stores.

I've also added a new article to my website which contains five of my most basic recipes for non-toxic household cleaners. I know, it has nothing to do with jewelry, but everyone keeps asking me for them! I have lots of great green cleaning recipes that I've been using for years, so I may add to this from time to time. Keep checking back. To view, click on the "Articles" link at the bottom of any page on my website.

JEWELRY TRENDS:

I really don't know why I'm telling you this since I don't sell them, but one of the cutest, and most predominant, hand-crafted jewelry trends is to make pendants using old Scrabble game tiles with pretty pieces of paper, photos or fabric glued to them and a simple bail on the back for putting a chain through. Some of them are faced with pieces of glass and some are just covered with waterproof glue. You'll find them all over Etsy for $5-10 each.

JEWELRY BUYING TIP:

What is 925 Sterling Silver? In my product pages I often use the term 925 sterling silver. This means that the alloy used is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% some other metal--usually copper. Fine silver at 99.9% pure is far too soft to be shaped into functional items. 925 is the industry standard for sterling though lesser percentages are sometimes available. Currently, many manufacturers are working on alloys using other metals which may help in tarnish resistance.

Next month, instead of the regular newsletter, I'll be sending out a Gift-Giving Guide with lots of items under $10 for stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, ornament exchanges, office gift exchanges, teacher gifts and more. I know it's a little early, but I have some customers who plan on placing large custom orders once they see the product samples and I must plan ahead for that. Remember that I always have FREE gift wrapping.
