Sue Runyon Designs Newsletter April 2008
Here in the Southwest, spring has arrived. Flowers are blooming. I know those of you who are in northern states are still wading through drifts of snow. In the meantime, spring has inspired me to create new, fresh designs that may bring a little warmth and color to your life. Since spring and summer clothes often call for a light hand with accessorizing, I've been inspired to create delicate yet colorful earrings. I'm especially pleased with my "spring whisper" earrings with carved coral flowers and pearls on thin silver chain. Next week (April 6-12) I'll be celebrating Spring with a week long EARRING SALE. All earrings will be on sale. Sale prices will be listed on my website starting Sunday. Also, look for sale prices on a few other items. If you've had your eye on something this is the perfect time to buy. I've searched out several items that are difficult to find except through wholesalers. I now have magnetic "converter clasps" which attach to your existing lobster claw or spring ring necklace clasps to change them into magnetic clasps. These are wonderful gifts for anyone with arthitis or trouble seeing. I have both silver and gold colors for $2.00 each and they are very strong magnets. Remember, though, if you are buying a set from me and need a magnetic clasp, I can often change out the clasp for a prettier style magnetic clasp--often at no extra charge--just ask. I also got in some of those little clear plastic "earnuts" that you slide onto hook ear wires to keep earrings in place. Some women have a lot of trouble keeping hook style earrings on and earnuts are really hard to find. I'll send you some FREE with order if you let me know you need them. You've been asking me for blackstone bead necklaces with a pop of color. I listened. There are several new designs to choose from with red and turquoise accents and I just got in a shipment with red coral beads to make new designs. I also now have cell phone lanyards I made with gorgeous large natural stone beads--jade, turquoise and agate. These make your cell phone or PDA easy to find in your purse and also make beautiful zipper pulls for jackets or embellishments for handbags and backpacks. Great gift idea for the lady who isn't really into jewelry. JEWELRY BUYING TIPS I've said it before and will say it again. Watch the prices you pay for jewelry! I went into some mall department stores a few days ago to do a little market research and was horrified at freshwater pearl prices and quality. For example, I saw memory wire bracelets with small, medium quality, freshwater nugget pearls listed for $167.99. To be fair, they were on sale for 50% off, but in my opinion, that's a $10-20 bracelet at best. Nugget pearls are not considered to be the most desirable shape. Most pearls come from China (even if they say Japan). With the 2008 Summer Olympics coming to Beijing, pearl prices are on the rise world wide--at least for this year. Do expect to pay a little more for a set than last year especially since silver and gold prices are also very high right now. I am not raising the prices on my current inventory, but may have to when I reorder. Right now, from me, you will be getting last year's prices. In response to that horribly expensive memory wire bracelet, I've been inspired to get in some supplies to make some of my own. Look for those to appear on the website over the next week or so. I don't have any nugget pearls so will be using MUCH nicer button pearls instead. Memory wire bracelets are one-size fits all so they are great for gifts. JEWELRY TRENDS Jewelry trends for many years were slim gold and silver chains with small pendants or charms. When wearing that demure style, it's common to wear a necklace or two, bracelets, watch, earrings, hair accessories and rings all at once. These days accessory styles are much more bold and it's so easy to over accessorize. Instead of thinking of accessories in the old way, now think about wearing focal pieces. Also, consider your clothing. Embellishments and bold prints on clothing are extremely popular now as are eye catching handbags, belts, shoes, scarves and even sunglasses with jewels on the sides. You want to balance your outfit with different weight fabrics, textures, patterns, colors and shine. For the most part, watches for women have gone by the wayside in favor of checking the time on a cell phone. Also no longer popular, is to wear a set of jewelry with necklace, earrings and bracelet all at once. Break up the set and wear just one or two pieces at a time. Decide where you want the focus to be (or not be). If you have a great new handbag, wear a chunky bracelet to call attention to it. Have a lovely slim neck? Wear long dangle earrings. Something to go with your shorts and flip flops on the beach this summer? Try an ankle bracelet. Solid color blouse? Wear a bold necklace. If you haven't visited my website in a while, now is the time. I've worked hard on improving the photography and now have clearer, brighter photographs with truer color. Remember my SALE starting next Sunday (April 6). All earrings and a few other items will be on sale. www.suerunyondesigns.com
